WGME-13 Covers Fundraiser

WGME-13 in Portland traveled to Standish to cover the Sharon Strong Fundraiser on May 1, 2021. The event, held in honor of Sharon Rumery, who was diagnosed with stage 4B lung cancer in January, raised close to $9,000 for Hair Matters.

“About 15 people cut their hair on Saturday to help Hair Matters,” WGME reported. “Rumery says the event has been overwhelming.”

“It means a lot,” she said. “It makes me feel very emotional.”

Hair donations took place outside of Better Fitness Center. These donations will be used to make wigs for cancer patients who have lost their hair.

Rumery’s son, Larry Scola, who organized the event at his gym, said that moment he saw the group finishing the event’s morning walk was unforgettable.

“When we saw people coming down from the end of the parking lot walking down with a sign, 100 people strong, all here to meet my mother, and helped finish out the walk with us. It hits [my heart] you know?” he said.
